One month later...the first of many posts (also: Vacation Recap, Day 1)

For the record, the plan was never to go dormant for a month after the initial rant.

I feel like it makes me look weak.

What it was...was just me simply not having the motivation or the energy to start at the time. I posted...and got distracted. College basketball, continuing the job search (as fruitless as it has felt from time to time) and some domestic projects consumed the rest of my time.

I am writing this, however, from a hotel room in downtown Phoenix, Arizona. On the road on a family vacation, trying to show my little one that there is more to vacations (it's spring break week) than Disneyland or Legoland or Sea World.

Today's adventure included a spring training baseball game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Los Angeles Dodgers, and a visit to a touristy, kind of cheesy but still fun fake western town called "Rawhide" in Chandler, Arizona. The son was excited by the chance to ride a "horse" (aka a burro), pet a turkey at the tiny petting zoo, ride a stagecoach and a small train, and to pan for gold. It always helps, when panning for gold, to have the pan pre-seeded with gold nuggets.

(By the way, there are implied quotes around the word "gold" in the entire preceeding paragraph.)

After it got chilly quickly while at Rawhide, we utilized modern technology and our smartphones to navigate our way to an interesting stop for a quick late dinner. Located in Mesa, Arizona, Organ Stop Pizza made for an entertaing close to our day.

It's not the best pizza I've ever had, but really, you don't hit this place up simply for pizza. This is one instance where the ambiance makes up for what the pizza might be lacking, because the main dining room is home to a Wurlitzer Theatre Organ. It is an amazing machine, and if you are ever in Phoenix, it is definitely worth catching the show just to watch the organ in action.

Tomorrow: Arizona State University and Scottsdale.
