Music Monday Bonus: "Summer Rain" - an original composition
There's no embedded music video or song clip for this post since I can't write music.
I've messed around with musical instruments for years, so I have no formal training outside of a couple of intro to music theory courses.
But that didn't stop me from writing song lyrics for about six years in the mid to late 1990s.
The song below I wrote the lyrics for during the summer before my senior year of college. It was inspired by a girl (or two) that I may or may not have had a thing for at the time during that summer but I could never convince myself to actually get up the courage to do something about it. Fear of rejection and all of that jazz. I usually just played out the conversation in my head to what I assumed was going to be its natural conclusion.
I've always liked how the world smells after a rainshower or thunderstorm during the summer. The petrichor
Anyway, as often happens, I never told the girl(s) involved that they served as the inspiration for this song. But if either of them happen to read it, I hope they like it.
SUMMER RAIN
He’s sitting by the
windowsill
Trying to keep his
mind from wandering away
It’s easy for him
to get distracted
And she don’t understand
What she means to him
The summer rain
Is washing down on
him
Covering his face
like warm wet tears
He’s waiting for
her to come to him
And he don’t understand
Why she doesn’t
want him
And she don’t
understand
What she means to him
The soothing sound
of
The summer rain
Offering relief
that isn’t there
No it ain’t there
And he don’t understand
Why she doesn’t
want him
And she don’t
understand
What she means to him
And he wants to know
How she can be his
And she wants to
know
How to let him down
easy
Don’t believe the
deceiving summer rain
Don’t believe the
deceiving summer rain
