2015 Valentine's Day Countdown: God Only Knows
I am willing to make an exception for Brian Wilson, especially when it comes to the album Pet Sounds.
And especially when it comes to this song.
Before this song, the word "God" was not used in popular music. In fact, Brian and his cowriter Tony Asher were worried that the song would not get airplay because of such an overt reference to a deity being used in the title.
That concern turned out to be unfounded, and the song became a classic. In fact, Paul McCartney, who has performed the song in concert with Wilson, states that it is one of the few songs that reduces him to tears every time he hears it.
It is also one of this author's favorite songs, and was a perfect way to kick off this 14 song, 14 day countdown of "love" songs.
