2014 Christmas Countdown Song: There Are Much Worse Things To Believe In
So it is not a typical Christmas song.
But as the bonus song in yesterday’s post illustrates,
the Colbert Christmas Special was not a typical Christmas show.
It is one of the first things I put on during Black
Friday, as that is the start of the holiday season. I usually watch it at least
twice a year and this song is the finale for the show.
Sung with Elvis Costello, it is about the spirit of the
holidays and while it may seem corny to some to have faith or enjoy the season,
there are definitely much worse things that one could believe in out there.
And sure, I’m a skeptic at times. I’m a cynic, although I
try not to be. And the purely religious aspect of the holiday doesn’t mean
anything to me (but that’s a conversation for another time).
But the spirit of the holiday season – well, that is what
matters. The charity that, while at times overwhelming and would probably be
better served being spread out throughout the year, is always a welcome sight.
Whether it’s the charitable giving of a professional
football player making the wildest dreams of 11 kids come true, or the
anonymous good Samaritan that did a similar thing for families who had items on
layaway and were probably stressing out about how to pay for them-well, even
the most cynical and skeptical person has to be warmed to their core by that,
right?
